The Siding You Can See Is Only Half of What Determines Whether It Lasts
The Siding Decision That Actually Matters Isn’t the Color. It’s What Goes Behind the Panels.
Most homeowners evaluate siding by curb appeal. But the decisions that determine whether siding performs for 30–50 years or starts failing within five are made before a single panel goes up — in the moisture management system between the panel face and the wall structure behind it.
That system has three components: a continuous housewrap that prevents bulk water infiltration, properly flashed window and door openings that drain moisture out rather than wicking it inward, and correctly installed J-channel, corner posts, and trim at every wall transition. These are the locations where water reliably finds its way behind panels — and where improper installation creates concealed moisture pathways that destroy sheathing and framing long before the problem shows on the surface.
Ohio Roof Masters holds LP BuildSmart Preferred, James Hardie Select, and CertainTeed 5-Star Contractor certifications — each requiring demonstrated compliance with manufacturer moisture management specifications. Most Ohio siding contractors don’t hold these certifications, and many skip the housewrap integration, tape flashing, and kick-out details that make the difference between a 30-year installation and a 5-year failure.
“The most expensive siding mistake in Ohio isn’t picking the wrong color. It’s hiring a contractor who doesn’t install the moisture management system correctly. That mistake lives in the wall for years before it shows up on the surface.”
Three Reasons Ohio Siding Fails Early — None of Them Are the Panels
Ohio Roof Masters identifies these as the three most consistent causes of premature siding failure in Central Ohio homes. Each is a system failure, not a material failure — and each is preventable with correct installation:
Missing or Improperly Integrated Housewrap
Housewrap is the moisture membrane between siding and sheathing. Incorrectly lapped seams or omitted sections give water a direct path to the wood substrate. Ohio’s freeze-thaw cycles force moisture deeper into sheathing that can be structurally failing while looking intact from outside. We install continuous, properly lapped and taped housewrap on every project — and inspect existing housewrap before new panels go over it.
Unflashed Window and Door Openings
Caulk-only window installation requires recaulking every few years — and when it fails, moisture reaches sheathing at window corners, one of the most expensive findings during siding replacement. We install tape flashing at every window and door sill, integrated with housewrap, and inspect sheathing condition at corners before new panels go on.
Missing Kick-Out Flashing at Roofline-to-Wall Transitions
Where a roof meets a vertical wall, all roof drainage converges at one point. Without kick-out flashing, that water runs directly behind the siding at the wall’s most concentrated drainage point. We encounter missing kick-out flashing on a significant portion of Central Ohio projects — and install it at every roofline-to-wall transition as standard practice.
WHICH SIDING SERVICE DO YOU NEED?
Ohio Roof Masters applies the repair-first philosophy to siding the same way we apply it to every exterior service. If a section of siding was damaged in a hail event, a vehicle impact, or a localized rot condition, replacing only the affected section is the right answer not a full re-siding project. If moisture infiltration has compromised sheathing behind multiple wall sections, or if the existing installation has systemic moisture management failures that a surface repair can’t correct, replacement is the honest recommendation. Here’s how to think about which scope applies:
Siding Repair
Best when:
- Damage is localized — wind-blown section, hail impact to specific panels, one rotted area
- Surrounding siding is sound — no widespread moisture infiltration behind panels
- Sheathing behind the damaged section is confirmed intact
- Existing installation has proper housewrap integration that’s still functional
- Matching material is available for the profile and color
What it involves: Removal of the specific damaged panels, inspection of housewrap and sheathing condition behind the removed section, replacement with matched material, proper integration with surrounding panels and J-channel, and re-establishment of the moisture management seal at the repair perimeter. Finding sheathing damage during a repair scope is documented and presented before proceeding — not discovered mid-project.
The honest note: Isolated siding damage that reveals compromised sheathing or failed housewrap behind it changes the scope recommendation. A repair that installs new panels over wet, rotted sheathing produces a short-term surface fix and a long-term structural problem. Ohio Roof Masters identifies the condition before new material goes in.
Siding Installation
Best when:
- New construction or addition requiring siding where none exists
- Re-roofing or full exterior renovation where siding is being upgraded as part of a coordinated project
- Converting from one material type to another — wood to vinyl, original aluminum to LP SmartSide
- Completing a full exterior upgrade where coordinating with roofing, gutters, and fascia in one mobilization
What it involves: Full installation from sheathing out — housewrap installed or verified and repaired, window and door openings properly tape-flashed, kick-out flashing at roofline transitions, corner posts, starter strip, panel installation to manufacturer specifications, and all trim details completed. Material selection — vinyl or LP SmartSide — based on homeowner priorities, budget, and long-term ownership plans. The 20% returning customer discount applies when siding installation is bundled with an existing or concurrent OHM roofing or exterior project.
The best-time argument: The best time to address siding is when the roofline and edge system are also in scope. Kick-out flashing at roofline transitions is most efficiently installed as part of a coordinated roofing-and-siding project — addressing it after the roof is complete requires re-disturbing the roofline termination. Ohio Roof Masters coordinates both scopes as one project when both are warranted.
Siding Replacement
Best when:
- Existing installation has widespread moisture management failures — failed or missing housewrap, unflashed windows
- Paint is failing systemically across multiple elevations
- Multiple sections showing rot, warping, cracking, or moisture infiltration
- Sheathing damage is widespread enough that surface repairs don’t address the underlying condition
- Existing material is at or beyond end of service life
- Homeowner is upgrading material — vinyl to LP SmartSide, or aluminum to current-generation materials
- Full exterior renovation coordinating roofing, siding, gutters, fascia, and soffit
What it involves: Complete removal of existing siding and trim, full inspection of housewrap, sheathing, and framing before new material is installed, sheathing repair or replacement where moisture damage is found, new housewrap installation, proper window and door tape flashing, kick-out flashing at all roofline transitions, new siding installation to manufacturer specifications. The $3,000 discount applies on qualifying installations of 2,500 sq ft or more.
The full-system argument: Siding replacement is the only opportunity to correct moisture management failures that have been building behind existing panels. Ohio Roof Masters uses that opportunity — every replacement project includes a sheathing inspection and housewrap assessment before new material goes up. What we find is documented with CompanyCam photos before scope is expanded.
The Assessment That Comes Before the Material Conversation
Ohio Roof Masters doesn’t arrive at a siding project with a sample board and a contract. Before any material is specified or any scope is committed, we conduct a structured assessment of the wall assembly condition, the existing moisture management installation, and the roofline transitions that determine how water will interact with whatever goes up next.
Roofline Transition and Drainage Assessment
We start at the roofline, not the wall. Kick-out flashing condition at every roofline-to-wall transition is evaluated first because these are the highest concentration drainage points on the wall surface and the locations where moisture infiltration behind siding most consistently originates. Missing or improperly installed kick-out flashing is documented and corrected before new siding is installed
Existing Housewrap and Sheathing Condition
At any section where siding will be removed for repair or full replacement housewrap condition and sheathing integrity are assessed before new material is specified. We probe sheathing at window corners, at bottom plate level, and at any section where surface staining or soft spots suggest moisture accumulation. Findings are documented with CompanyCam photos and presented before scope is expanded. What we find under the existing siding doesn’t become a surprise on day two of the pr
Window and Door Opening Assessment
Every window and door opening perimeter is evaluated for existing flashing methods tape flashing integrated with housewrap versus caulk as the primary barrier. Where caulk-only installation is found, the condition of the sheathing at the sill and corners is assessed. New window and door flashing using tape-integrated-with-housewrap method is standard on all OHM siding projects regardless of whether the existing installation used a different method.
Material Selection and Three Options Presented
Based on assessment findings and homeowner priorities budget, maintenance tolerance, long-term ownership plans, architectural style Ohio Roof Masters presents up to three clear options: the appropriate repair scope, a standard system installation, and a premium material upgrade. Each option includes what’s covered, what’s not, the moisture management approach specific to that scope, and full installed pricing. You choose based on your situation with the information to make the decision confidently.
What to Watch For — Before a Surface Problem Becomes a Wall Assembly Problem
🔴 Soft, spongy, or crumbling sections when pressed — especially around windows and at the bottom course Active rot in the sheathing behind the panel. The moisture has been present long enough to structurally compromise the wood substrate. Needs immediate assessment — rot spreads into adjacent framing if left unaddressed.
🔴 Bubbling or blistering beneath the panel surface Moisture trapped between the siding face and the surface behind it is expanding. Common at unflashed window openings where water has been entering the gap and absorbing into the substrate. Not a paint problem — a moisture management failure.
🔴 Visible gaps or separation at J-channel, corner posts, or window perimeters Open joints are active water entry points. Every rain event is depositing water at those gaps and the caulk or tape behind them is the only remaining barrier. If the caulk has cured and cracked, the barrier is gone.
🔴 Interior water staining at wall surfaces — especially below windows or at wall-roof transitions Moisture has penetrated behind the siding and traveled through the wall assembly to interior surfaces. This is a late-stage signal — the sheathing and framing have been accumulating moisture for a significant period before interior staining appears.
🟡 Paint peeling systematically from LP SmartSide or wood siding Paint adhesion failure across multiple sections indicates moisture is migrating to the surface from behind — not just weathering at the face. Assessment of housewrap and sheathing condition warranted before repainting.
🟡 Warping, cupping, or buckling panels across multiple sections Dimensional instability in the panel material from moisture cycling. More common in lower-grade vinyl (thinner profiles) in extreme cold, and in wood-based products where moisture management installation was inadequate. Assessment determines whether the cause is correctable with panel replacement or requires housewrap and sheathing remediation.
🟡 Cracked or broken vinyl panels — isolated sections Impact damage — hail, vehicle, debris — is typically a repair-level scope if the surrounding material is sound and matching product is available. Assessment confirms sheathing condition behind the damaged panels before new material is installed.
🟡 Fading, chalking, or significant color loss — vinyl siding UV degradation of the surface treatment on older vinyl profiles. Not a structural concern, but an indicator of material age. Evaluation during a roofing or edge system project is the most cost-efficient timing.
🔵 Siding material 20+ years old with no recent assessment Approaching or beyond typical service life range for lower-grade profiles. Not an emergency, but evaluation is warranted — particularly to assess housewrap condition and window flashing before the material has failed enough to require emergency replacement.
WHY CHOOSE OHIO ROOF MASTERS FOR SIDING
LP BuildSmart Preferred, James Hardie Select, and CertainTeed 5-Star aren't marketing badges — they require demonstrated compliance with each manufacturer's installation specifications, including housewrap integration, window flashing, and kick-out flashing protocols. When we install siding, the system behind the panels is built to the standard the material warranty assumes.
Every siding removal is an opportunity to assess what's behind it. We inspect sheathing condition and housewrap integrity before new material goes on — documented with CompanyCam photos and presented before any scope is expanded. Covering compromised sheathing with new siding produces a cosmetically new wall with a structural problem still developing behind it.
If hail damaged three panels and surrounding material is sound, we scope a repair. If one window corner has isolated rot, we address that section. About 30% of exterior conditions we assess don't require the full scope a homeowner expected — siding included.
Kick-out flashing, window flashing, and eave edge details all intersect when multiple exterior services are in scope. Ohio Roof Masters handles the full project as one coordinated job — one timeline, one mobilization. Existing customers receive 20% off any secondary service.
Every siding installation carries a 10-year workmanship warranty. The $3,000 discount applies to installations of 2,500 sq ft or more. Qualifying projects are backed by Directorii third-party protection up to $250,000 — independent coverage that stays in force regardless of contractor circumstances.

I have to say that Aaron Gearhart, my roofing specialist, directed this entire project very well. He worked with us against an extremely tight deadline to get us under roof just 1 day before the snow hit. I only gave him a few days notice, but they made it happen - when all the other 7 quotes I received said it would be 6-8 weeks to even start (or maybe not until next spring), Aaron and his crews had it done the very next week. Unbelievable save from these guys, as water had been leaking through to my master bedroom/bath unbeknownst to me until the day I called Aaron. He inspected everything as it was completed, probably 4 or 5 trips to my house, enough that I now consider him more than just my roof expert, but a good friend, after going through this together, he really saved the day and my whole fear of going into the winter with these leaks and water damage. Also, I cannot say enough praise for the 4 man crew that did the roof, or the 3 man crew that did my gutters/flashing/soffits, even the material delivery guys were great, and mostly these guys cleaned up/picked up every scrap of metal/wood/shingles from my entire yard without hesitation and without asking. Just wanted to leave my 2 cents on here in case it helps anyone who is on the fence about roof contractors, as I mentioned, I had selected Aaron's company after receiving different quotes from 8 different companies. Pricing was great, follow-up was great, they even scheduled a follow-up inspection 6 months ahead in the spring of 2026 just to make sure everything held up after the winter storms.Posted on A Google UserTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
